Joyce's French Toast
1 or 1-1/2 French batards, preferably day-old
8 eggs
3 cups milk
4 tsps. sugar
3/4 tsp. salt
1 tsp. vanilla
1 tbsp. butter
Cinnamon to taste
Butter 13 x 9 casserole heavily. Slice bread 1" thick and place in pan (pack it in). Beat all ingredients, except butter. Pour over bread (it will be soupy). Dot butter on each piece of bread. Sprinkle with cinnamon & sugar to taste. Cover with foil and refrigerate overnight. Bake uncovered at 350 45-50 minutes. Heat syrup. Cut into squares.
